Lacquer engraving
Lacquer engraving, which is applicable
to staple products sold on domestic and
abroad markets, is one kind of important
decorative techniques of Yangzhou
lacquerware industry. The process of
this technique is engraving various
patterns with different knives on the
finished lacquer base, and then filling
in colors, covering with gold leaves and
scattering pearl scraps according to the
tableau. This technique can be divided
into six technological processes, namely
engraving, shovelling, smoothing,
coloring, covering and scattering. The
main artistic characteristics of this
technique are smooth lines, vivid
images, even colors and
impressive-looking.
Bone-and-stone inlaying technique
Bone-and-stone inlaying technique, which
is a traditional kind of Yangzhou
lacquerware, was created by a native of
Yangzhou , Zhou Zhu of the Ming Dynasty.
This decorative technique use ivory, ox
bones, mica, pearl shells, abalone,
Shoushan stones, Qingtian stones, etc.
As materials to make products with
artistic features of rich colors,
equisite craving, beautiful designs,
strong plastic effect and vividness by
means of relief, circular engravure,
hollowing-out, surface inlaying,
inlaying, golden drawing and other
techniques. The products are mainly used
in making all sorts of ordinary,
medium-grade and high-grade screens,
floor screens, furniture, tourist
souvenirs, gifts and so on. |

Yangzhou polished mother-of-pearl
lacquerware
Yangzhou polished mother-of-pearl
lacquerware has a strong local style and
great effect in the country due to its
characteristic workmanship. The process
of this decorative technique is choosing
high-quality pearl, shells, mica,
abalone and other materials firstly.
After being polished, they have become
thin slices with different colors and
then are cut into pieces according to
the tableau demand and finally inlaid
onto the lacquer base. By means of fine
lacquer-coating technique, the products
have artistic effects of being as smooth
as a mirror, limpid, sharp contrast
between black and white, noble and
graceful. They are applicable to
mass-producing furniture, screens,
handing panels, gifts and tourist
souvenirs.
Lacquer carving technique
Lacquer carving technique was created
during the Tang Dynasty. The first
procedure of the technique is coating
about one hundred to hundreds of layers
of the Chinese raw lacquer on the object
and then carving various patterns and
beautiful decorative disigns with full
knife technique. During the Ming and
Qing Dynasties, on the basis of lacquer
caving technique, the craftsmen of
Yangzhou lacquerware selected and used
jadeite, agate, lapis, white jade,
coral, green jade, pearl shells, ivory
and other high-grade materials to carve
different relief design and then inlaid
them onto the lacquer carving decorative
patterns. It is a kind of creative
lacquer carving and jade inlaying
technique in Yangzhou.
Mother-of-pearl dotting technique
Mother-of-pearl dotting technique is
protected specially by our country as a
high-grade technique. ‘Dotting’ means
technique and ‘pearl’ means material.
The process of this technique is
selecting green snails, peal shells,
abalone and other high-grade materials
to cut into many pieces as thin as
cicadas wings, as small as pinpoint and
as dainty as autumn hair. Then they are
dotted onto the smooth surface of the
lacquerware base with special tools one
by one. By means of delicate
lacquer-coating technique, the product
has artistic style with gorgeous colors
and can change with light. Over the
years, many of the mother-of-pearl
dotted products have been selected as
state gifts to the foreign heads by our
country or collected as national
treasures.
'Lacquer inkslab'
'Lacquer inkslab' was created during the
Song Dynasty and greatly developed by
the famous lacquer masters Lu Ying-zhi
and Lu Kui-sheng during the Ming
Dynasty. The technique was lost during
the late period of the Qing Dynasty. In
1979, our factory began to develop it
and resumed it in March, 1981, and then
was appraised by relevant experts. The
product has the characteristics with
moist endowment, strong but not hard,
delicate but not slippery, giving off
ink without damaging hair and can be on
a par with Duan inkslab and She inkslab. |
